Coburn Place

Our Building

Coburn Place is housed in the former Indianapolis Public School (IPS) #66, Henry P. Coburn. The building was rehabbed to include 35 apartments, office space and common areas. We have apartments that can accommodate single women or families up to 6 members. Our apartment homes include bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and common living areas and come fully-furnished with everything from linens and dishes to furniture and toys. We are able to furnish the apartments solely on donations from the community. We update our wish list frequently with items in high demand.

We have many amenities on-site to support our women and children and make Coburn Place feel like a home including:

  • 3 quiet, confidential meeting rooms
  • large, multi-purpose community room with a full kitchen
  • 2 youth activity rooms
  • women’s and children’s computer labs
  • fitness center
  • laundry room
  • pantry
  • playground with a jungle gym and basketball court
  • peace garden
  • picnic benches and grills
  • gated and secure parking lot
  • program and administrative offices
  • 24/7 on-site support

In 2009, the building underwent another round of renovations. Six months after construction crews descended upon Coburn Place, they packed up their tools and left us with a beautifully rehabbed facility. Our 100 year-old windows look fabulous. The playground is ready for children to enjoy. Our new common areas, entrance, and staff office space ensure confidentiality and safety for families. Each day the staff, residents and visitors enjoy a redesigned parking lot (with twice the spaces) and an enhanced security system. We are also saving money with an energy efficient roof and digital thermostats.

Just five hours into the project, the second floor demolition is well underway! This is the old lobby area, which will house the new reception area, one other staff office, a new meeting space and the employee break room.

Two second floor apartments will be reconfigured into four staff offices. The two apartments were relocated to the first floor. The wall between them is being knocked out.
