Dear Friend,
October turns our thoughts toward falling leaves, football games and Halloween adventures. But this October we ask you to turn your thoughts to the important issue of domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this newsletter offers opportunities to get involved in the solution. In the U.S. alone, a person is physically abused by a current or former intimate partner every 9 seconds. That's equal to 9,600 people each day. Twenty five percent of women and 8% of men report being physically or sexually assaulted during their lives. While these numbers are alarming, hope and help are available, and education is key (see our Fall 2008 print newsletter in our archive). Take a quiz to find out how much you know about domestic violence. Learn how you can be supportive of someone experiencing abuse. Shop Designers' Closet and enjoy a fun way to support our efforts to help women become self-sufficient. Peace,

How to help someone suffering abuse |
| If someone you know is being abused... |
- Listen - Let her know you are there to listen. Be non-judgmental and supportive. Keep confidences.
- Talk to her about abuse in a general way - Let her know that millions of victims from all ethnic, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds suffer from abuse. Explain that violence is never acceptable. Tell her violence is not the victim's fault. Let her know that there are local agencies that can help.
- Guide her to community services - Gather information from local domestic violence resources and programs. Let her know that help is available with legal, safety, housing and emotional issues. Seek further advice from these agencies trained to deal with domestic violence. Call 317-926-4357 or 211 in Marion County for help.
- Help her create a safety plan - Let her know you are afraid for her and her children. Make a list of emergency contacts. Suggest she hide a suitcase of clothing, money, check books, Social Security cards, birth certificates, etc.
- Help her find a safe place when she is ready - Help her contact local domestic violence programs. Be careful if you offer safety in your home - abuse victims are in the greatest danger once they leave.
